The Michael Wilson studio was founded in the fall of 2000. The Japanese-American woodworker builds furniture from richly grained hardwoods, which are hand carved with old world joinery. Wilson creates modern-organic, sleek designs, which are sculptural, turning woodworking into a fine art. The exquisite pieces are branded and dated when finished. Before focusing on a career in design, Wilson was a sushi chef for seventeen years, where he honed his skill at detailed work. Learning quickly, he developed his own treatment for every step of production, choosing his materials from local suppliers, milling lumber himself, and creating his personal recipe for a non-synthetic oil and wax finish. An appreciation for natural and organic wooden forms enable his labor intensive chairs, tables, lamps, and sculptures to look effortlessly released from their core. These pieces reach Wilson's goal of the functional but distinctive, efficient yet soulful.
