Lawrence Weiner, one of the central figures in the formation of conceptual art has over the past five decades investigated forms of display and distribution that challenge traditional assumptions about the nature of the art object. His primary medium has been wall sculptures that consist of painted non descript lettering, with the elements described in his texts serving as material. His carpet features the text “FROM BEFORE AND AFTER”, juxtaposed with graphic elements. The carpet is made and hand knotted out of 100% silk. Lawrence Weiner has had solo shows at major institutions such as Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, UCCA Beijing, Castello di Rivoli in Torino, K21 Standehaus in Düsseldorf, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Dia:Chelsea New York, MOCA Los Angeles, Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Museo Tamayo, Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and MCA Chicago. Included in major biennials such as Venice Biennale International Exhibition, Documenta in Kassel, Skulptur Projekte Munster, Whitney Biennial New York, Istanbul Biennial and Biennale of Sydney. Collected by major institutions such as Tate in London and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
