Wilhelm Sasnal is a contemporary Polish artist, best known for his atmospheric paintings and short films derived from mass media, daily life, and art history. Comparable to the work of Luc Tuymans, Sasnal’s use of muted and photo-like hues hint at sinister undertones while maintaining an aura of mystery. For HENZEL STUDIO, Sasnal adapted a pencil drawing of outlines onto graph paper into the media at hand. Variable pile heights of the graphite lines create a carved effect, whereas enhanced composition of silk in the graphed areas create contrast and nuance. Wilhelm Sasnal has had exhibitions at major institutions such as Whitechapel Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Kunsthalle Basel, Haus der Kunst in München. Collected by major institutions such as Tate in London and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
