The Collective Design Fair
From April to May the focus of the design world shifts from Milan to New York City. NYC x Design events begin with the Collective Design fair. Created by Steven Learner, the fair concentrates on more of the limited edition, higher end Design/Art world than the other events of the week. In this email we've highlighted the designers we represent that showed in the Collective Design fair.
Fernando Mastrangelo
New York based designer Fernando Mastrangelo showed his Drift Collection as part of the Collective Design fair. This series is comprised of works built from sand and cement that shift from white to a deep blue.In a recent short film on his Drift collection, Mastrangelo explained that his inspiration stemmed from a recent trip to the South America region of Patagonia. He says, "There are six pieces in the [Drift] collection. Each one an attempt to capture the simplicity and elegance that nature does so...effortlessly."
Mastrangelo continues, "The forms, the pallet were all inspired by seeing the endless horizons [of Patagonia]. I was awe inspired by their sheer mass, grace and boundlessness. Cast sand mimicking the glacial formations. Mirrors recalling the calmness of the sea. Glaciers breaking, disrupting that stillness."
Lindsey Adelman
The Manhattan based designer's short film, "Some Relationships Are Better Than Others,"premiered at the Collective Design fair, along with drawings and a Branching Disc chandelier.
The slow motion film depicts two Branching Burst chandeliers colliding and obliterating each other upon impact. Tom Dixon at Salone del Mobile 2016
Tom Dixon’s upcoming “Materiality” series of lighting, furniture and accessories premieres in Milan during Salone del Mobile.
Tom Dixon writes:
“For Milan 2016 we present THE RESTAURANT, a collaboration with Caesarstone where four futuristic kitchens and four radical Tom Dixon dining halls collide in a late baroque deconsecrated church in central Milan.”
The Restaurant will exhibit lines from Materiality, which are inspired by essential aspects of Tom Dixon’s design. These product lines include Curve, Fade and Copper.Tom Dixon descibes Curve, Fade and Copper in his official invitation to “The Restaurant.”
CURVE a new geometrical light that pushes the boundaries of thin sheet etched metal fabrication. With its microscopic precision-pierced surface and soft nickel silver coating Curve internally reflects and emits a filtered glow of ethereal light.
FADE a blow moulded polycarbonate light cannon. Its teardrop shape focuses the light bulb’s output into a satisfyingly round and luminous circle. The metalised finish is unusual as it graduates from completely reflective to transparent in an even fade along the body of the light.COPPER the familiar sphere gets squashed then stretched to create a new pair of complimentary forms in the trademark mirrored copper, allowing new clusters to be formed, lower ceilings to be illuminated or narrow corridors to be colonised by the Copper family.
And to complete “The Restaurant”, Tom Dixon and Caesarstone will fully immerse designers by serving different courses “in each space, curated by Italian food design studio Arabeschi di Latte.”
Tom Dixon describes the full planned exhibit as:
“An utterly unique experience where you can eat, slow down and enjoy the latest ideas in Materiality, Luminosity and Texture.” - October 05, 2017

Lee Broom at Salone del Mobile 2016
During Salone del Mobile the London based designer, Lee Broom, is displaying new work throughout Milan in a repurposed, and refinished, delivery van. Broom has titled his mobile exhibition, "Salone del Automobile."
Lee Broom’s new series, “Optical”, will feature globe pendants and globe floor lamps with a pattern of disjointed black stripes as a throwback style to the 1990’s.
Broom explains his inspiration as, “[The Optical series is] really inspired by the period in which I grew up in.” And Broom continues, “I guess my first real foray into interiors was decorating my own bedroom in the early 90s and Optical really reflects the monochrome graphics and mood of that era.”
Broom’s mobile display will stop at Brera Design District, Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Zona Tortona, San Gregorio Docet, Ventura Lambrate and more. You can track the pop up gallery on http://www.leebroom.com/ during Salone del Mobile.
